What this site collects, which is very little

What we collect

Nothing, unless you write to us. There is no account to make and no server of ours between you and the page — every page is a static file. The one exception is the form on contact, and it only collects what you type into it: your name, your email address, which of four subjects you picked, and your message. Reading the site does not use it and nothing here asks you for anything else.

That form is handled by Formspree, who pass what you send on to us as email and keep a copy in their dashboard. They are a processor acting for us and they do not sell or share it; their own terms are at formspree.io. We keep the email as long as it is useful to have and you can ask us to delete it, by the same form or by replying to us. Nothing you send is used for advertising and there is no mailing list to be added to.

We do use Google Analytics, to see which chapters people read. It sets cookies in your browser and tells Google the page you are on, roughly where in the world you are, and what browser and device you are using. Google processes that for us and we see it only as counts and charts, never as individual people. If you would rather not be counted, a tracker blocker or your browser’s “do not track” setting will stop it, and nothing on the site breaks when it does.

Analytics is loaded only on howtowatchbaseball.com, and only after the page itself has rendered. With JavaScript turned off the site works completely and you are not counted at all.

Your browser also tells our host the ordinary things any web request carries — an IP address, a browser version, the page you asked for — and those may appear in the host’s own logs. We do not read or analyse them.

Advertising

This site carries advertising where there is an advertiser: a keyline box on most pages — not this one, the 404, or the home page — and a classified column on six month pages and on /classifieds. If nobody is advertising, there is no box. What's showing is always visible on the page itself. None of it is served by an ad network — every box is built into the page at deploy time, the same way every other page is. There is no auction, no third-party script, and no tracking pixel.

No advertising cookie is set, and no consent platform is needed, because nothing about the advertising tracks you. The only thing that reaches an advertiser is an ordinary link you choose to click, at which point their site sees you the same way any site does when you follow a link to it — we send nothing to them, and they learn nothing from us.

What is embedded from elsewhere

Google Analytics, and nothing else. There are no third-party fonts, no embedded videos, no social widgets and no advertising scripts. Every image, stylesheet and typeface is served from this site, so on any page you are simply reading, Google is the only outside company reached.

Formspree is the one addition and it is not embedded anywhere. The contact form is an ordinary form that posts to them when you press send — there is no script of theirs on the page, and if you never use the form, your browser never contacts them at all.

Season data

Historical game results come from Retrosheet and are baked into the site when it is built. Reading them contacts nobody — the data is already here.
