The Yanks suffered their first loss in 13 games to the Red Sox laast night when Billy Goodman homered in the 11th for a 2-1 victory. The world champions got off to a running start today by scoring three runs against Maury McDermott before he was re placed by Bill Werle with only one out in the first inning. Ewell Blackwell got credit for A McDermott pitch hit Yogi Berra on the left arm in the first inning, but the catcher was not bruised seriously. However, he was replaced by Charlie Silvera before the Red Sox took their first turns at the plate.

Bob Porterfield of Washington had a one-hitter. Last night Ford baffled Cleveland on one hit —a slow-rolling grounder that never got as far as third base. And Buhl, another Braves first-year man. mastered the Giants on two hits. Yanks Go Two-Up. Ford won his second game, 7-0, giving the Yankees a comfortable two-game bulge over the second-place Indians. Buhl lost his shutout in the ninth, but still triumphed easily. 8-1. The Yankee victory was a masterpiece by Ford, who re fused to sign his contract this spring until he got paid what he thought a Yankee was worth.

In the National League, the Cincinnati Redlegs must have used up all their hitting power in the first game of their double header against the Dodgers. They won the opener. 13-5, on home runs by Jim Greengrass, Gus Bell, Ted Kluszewski and Wil lard Marshall. But in the nightcap, Carl Esrkine held them to one hit— a bunt down the third base line by Bell—as the Dodgers registered a 10-0 shutout. Erskine’s pitching snapped the Dodgers out of a four-game losing streak.

Dodgers equaled a modem major league record by leaving 18 baserunners stranded in the first nine innings. The game was being played with a time limit because Brooklyn had to catch a train, and the 10th inning was to be the last. The crushing blow came off Preacher Roe, who also threw a home run ball to Andy Semi nick in the fifth inning. Bud Podbielan pitched an amazing game for the Redlegs. He walked 13 men in the first nine innings—one short of the modern National League record —gave up six hits and saw one man get aboard on an error. Yet he was scored on only once, in the first inning when Jackie Robinson doubled after two walks.

Hank Bauer homered in the 11th inning with a man on base to give the Yankees a hard earned 4-2 triumph over the lowly Tigers, while the second place White Sox lost their second in a row, a two-hit 2-1 verdict to Harry Byrd and the Athletics. The loss pushed Chicago two games back of the pace-setting Yankees. The Red Sox defeated the Browns, 4-3.

Mauro, a left-handed hitter who throws right, batted only nine times with the Dodgers this season and failed to hit.
